Manus Refugee Camp

The Manus Island Regional Processing Centre was built as an offshore immigration detention facility to enforce Australia’s strict border control policies. Its primary purpose was to deter asylum seekers from attempting dangerous ocean journeys to Australia by boat. Under this system, individuals were sent to the remote island to have their refugee status processed, while the policy simultaneously ensured that no one arriving by boat would ever be allowed to permanently settle in Australia
